UC Riverside is located at the edge of the foothills in the city
of Riverside, a moderate-sized city of about 250,000 residents,
located in a fast-growing area. Riverside is centrally located in
southern California, within 90 minutes of a variety of attractions.
To the south and southwest lie San Diego and Newport Beach. To the
east, lie desert parks (including Joshua Tree) and the resort communities
around Palm Springs. To the north are the mountain lakes and ski
resorts. To the west there is the vast metropolis of Los Angeles.
The mild climate on campus (no snow) allows for a variety of attractive
plantings, including citrus groves.
Reasonably priced housing is available for graduate students on
or near campus (but a car is advisable). The Mission
Inn, a historic hotel in downtown Riverside, has long attracted
visitors from around the country. See also Accommodations.
The University of California, Riverside is one of the eight general
campuses of one of the
world’s great university systems. It thus allows tremendous
access to libraries (including extensive electronic resources),
computing facilities, and sports and cultural events.
