A Description of the Riverside area
Founded in 1870, Riverside was originally the center of the citrus industry, and our campus citrus research station grew soon thereafter. Orange groves and the warm dry climate attracted Easterners looking to escape the cold, as well as a variety of workers for the agricultural and tourist industries. The Riverside Art Museum was designed by Julia Morgan, famous for her work on William Randolph Hearst's Castle in San Simeon. The Mission Inn, a historic hotel in downtown Riverside, has long attracted visitors from around the country. Today, known as a center of education and of government, Riverside is a moderate-sized city of about 250,000 residents, located in one of the fastest-growing areas of California.
Riverside is centrally located in southern California, within 90 minutes of a variety of attractions. To the south and southwest lie San Diego and Newport Beach. To the east, lie desert parks (including Joshua Tree) and the resort communities around Palm Springs. To the north are the mountain lakes and ski resorts. To the west there is the vast metropolis of Los Angeles.
